North West Division 2
Match Day 1 Report
Artigarvan 1 – 9 Roe Valley
(Conor Hassan x3, Simon Moore x3, John Stewart, Gary Miller, Own-Goal)
Roe Valley travelled from Prehen yesterday with all three points in a dominant first half display. A five man midfield immediately caused the home team problems, with little space to take a touch or play a pass. An accurate ball from John Stewart slipped Conor Hassan in to open the scoring, who made no mistake hitting the top corner with a strike just outside the box (0:1). Moments later Hassan returned the favour to Stewart, who got on the end of a cross with a neat finish from close range (0:2). Next up to get their name on the score sheet was Simon Moore, with another neat finish in the box (0:3). Shaun McGonagle controlled the midfield with ease, and regained possession effortlessly. With three new signings in the back four, Eoghan Kelly and Stephen Walker dealt with everything in the middle, and Mullan and Owens likewise at fullback. Another two quick goals ensured Simon Moore the match ball before the half (0:5). Hassan also completed his hatrick with a goal on either side of an Artigarvan own-goal to take the scoreline to (0:8). New front man Gary Miller worked his socks up front, and was beginning to wonder whether it was his day or not. However, Terence Owens cross found Miller’s feet, who slotted home to take the score to (0:9). [HT]
The away side found it difficult to settle at the start of the second half, and were under pressure instantly; with a fired up Artigarvan side keen to win the second half. Chrissy McNicholl and Shaun Green were brought on around 55minutes, and fresh legs began to cause the home team problems again. McNicholl almost found the roof of the net with a thunder strike, and Eoghan Kelly was unlucky to convert from a Darren McLaughlin corner. Also coming on to make their debut was Ryan McLaughlin, who was a vocal presence from the start. However, with moments from a clean sheet, a fast bit of play down wing followed by a finish into the bottom corner made the score (1:9). [FT].
Despite being disappointed to concede late on, an encouraging start to the season for a new Roe Valley side, with 7 of the summer signings starting yesterday. Plenty to work on the training ground and with no one guaranteed a starting place, the hard work continues Monday night at Killane Road (7pm).
Next week (Saturday 2nd September) will host Lincoln Courts Reserves, who also got off to a winning start.
Any business that wishes to sponsor the match ball is most welcome to contact any player, or member of the committee or management team.
